A Sick Life by Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins

Synopsis: Memoir of a Popular American Music Entertainer.

Writing Style: First person straightforward.

Pacing: Fast.

Personal Highlights:  First off, most memorable was catching sight of this memoir (out-of-a-blue) and instantly knowing I had to read it. Citing T-Boz, it was a MTB (meant-to-be) moment.

I appreciated the fluency of Tionne telling her story. Clear-cut, down-to-earth, smooth voice...like her TLC sound, and solid good pacing. Reading about Sickle Cell was particularly eye-opening for me. Her view on medicine and physicians, I found on point. Loved her relationship with her mother, grandmother, and friends like Jessica; and actually the relationship between the R&B group TLC. More to the point, I respected the level-headedness of the telling of the overall story. The heavy parts...her illness and career pitfalls. The touching parts...the creation of “Waterfalls”, the fan reactions and the birth of her daughter. And among so much else going on, were splashes of humor. Oh man, and only funny after-the-fact (of course), was that “We see people hanging in the trees looking at your house,” and “Girl, we got some good news and some bad news.” – Two spots where I fell out laughing! That “Sa-diddy” however, I had to read twice. Haha. And the dual premise behind the title really hit it home, reigning in the many moving parts of this story, making for a powerful well-told memoir. Read it in a day! Highly Recommended!
