Afeni Shakur by Jasmine Guy
Writing Style: Straightforward.
Pacing: Fast
Premise: Glimpses of Afeni's life.
Personal Highlights: Aside from the neat 'novelish' writing, written in a 1st person style unlike any memoir or biography I've ever read before, the parts of Afeni's story that stood out were her personal 'insightful' truths. Resistance was what she first felt, NOT revolution. 'All she knew was she had to protect herself... and resist.' I loved the fact that she was a reader. It showed in how she internalized her journey... taking responsibility for her faults... acknowledging how "we dropped the ball..." and actually trying to clarify in the small platform she had to work with, what duty and honor meant to her. This book really is good (and engaging) as it is, and perhaps is enough, though at times I found myself wanting to read Afeni telling her story... full-on-out herself.
